Second Order Nature
Installation 2021
textile objects, nordic walking sticks, acrylic, jewellery, leather straps, outdoor cloth, vinyl, pencil drawing
Second Order Nature examines how outdoor gear embeds conceptions of nature, adventure and wilderness in an aesthetics of technical comfort. Like stretched leather skins, three textile puffer objects are hanging in a grid of Nordic walking sticks. Framed by a strip of schematic mountain silhouettes, the arrangement also resembles the diorama-like warehouse presentation from outdoor shops.
The mountain silhouettes originate from a collection of placeholder images from websites. Like the collection of pendants from charm bracelets, they decorate the attachment of the textiles. Instead of specific places and experiences, the shapes only represent their function as a substitute.
